“Throughout life, I think it is important to be mission driven, to live and work to improve personally and societally. I feel extremely proud of what I have accomplished. I am honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to become a physician. My journey has been complex. I am a true unicorn: an African American male physician. I break all of the stereotypes. I know that within my community and globally, I am viewed as a role model who demonstrates that education is truly transformative.”
Dr. Galen Vincent Henderson, MD, FNCS
Mission
The HEARD Center was announced at the 2024 NCS Annual Meeting to honor the legacy and memory of Dr. Galen Henderson, MD, FNCS. The HEARD Center's mission is to eliminate disparities in neurocritical care by advancing research, mentorship, and leadership opportunities that empower underrepresented health professionals and communities to ensure equitable access to care.
Vision
The HEARD Center envisions a future where disparities in neurocritical care no longer exist, and every patient—regardless of race, gender identity, socio-economic status, or geography—receives the highest quality of care. By championing underrepresented voices, advancing groundbreaking research, and building pathways to leadership, we aim to create a healthcare landscape that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and ensures equity for all.
