Ahmed Hassan, MD, FNCS, Medical Director of Neurosciences at Endeavor Health Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals, has been named President of the Neurocritical Care Foundation (NCCF). A fellowship-trained and board-certified Neurocritical Care physician, Dr. Hassan specializes in the treatment of complex neurological emergencies, including ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, and neuromuscular disorders.
Dr. Hassan completed his medical education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s six-year accelerated BA/MD Honors Program. He went on to complete his neurology residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident, followed by a fellowship in Neurocritical Care at Rush. His academic and professional career has included roles as Assistant Professor of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and as a faculty member in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Central DuPage Hospital in Illinois. He later served as Section Chief of Neurocritical Care and Neurology Residency Program Director at the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine before assuming his current role at Edward Hospital.
A dedicated leader in the field, Dr. Hassan has been an active member of the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS) since 2008, presenting at multiple Annual Meetings and serving on the Annual Meeting Committee. He was recognized with the NCS Presidential Citation Award in 2020, 2021, and 2022 and was named a Fellow of the Neurocritical Care Society (FNCS) in 2022.
Dr. Hassan has been involved with the NCCF since its inception, serving as its founding Vice President from 2020-2024. His contributions were instrumental in incorporating the organization, shaping the Foundation’s bylaws, securing its 501(c)(3) status, and fostering philanthropic support for neurocritical care research and education.
Driven by a passion for advancing patient care, Dr. Hassan believes the NCCF plays a critical role in shaping the future of neurocritical care.
“Being a part of the NCCF is the continuation of a lifelong goal to help advance the care of our patients”, stated Dr. Hassan. “I chose the field of Neurology and the specialty of Neurocritical Care because of the desire to help patients with life-threatening neurological disorders. Not only do these patients require high-level resources for their care, but there’s also so much opportunity for discovery and advancement in their care.
It's not enough to only provide care to our patients today with our current knowledge and resources, but it’s incumbent upon us as a medical society to continue to advance neurocritical care research and education, to provide even better care for our patients tomorrow and beyond.
The NCCF serves as the vehicle to help push our field forward, and being the drivers and passengers in that vehicle, by giving our time and effort in fundraising for research and education, is one of the most pure and sincere forms of care for our patients, and I’m so humbled to be a part of that cause.”
